DESCRIPTION OF ORIUNDI: Oriundo is an Italian word (coming from the Spanish language meaning 'originally from') used both in Italy and Spain to describe an immigrant of native ancestry. It is generally used for football players who were born in Latin America, whose ancestors emigrated from Italy and then immigrates back to Italy. Since its inception in 1905, FIFA requires football players to have either citizenship or close ancestral ties with the country for which they are going to play. Since Oriundi players qualify for the latter it is very easy that such players represent other countries rather than their native country when playing with a national team. This was widely used between the 1920's and 1960's by Italy and Spain, and in the last twenty years it is widely used by other countries, in particular those who have a long history of colonization, like England, Netherlands, France and Portugal (although these players are not always called Oriundi in there countries). Prior to 1964 when FIFA ruled that a player could not represent more than one country in his career, some players played with the National Team of both their ancestral country and their native country. The word Oriundi started to be used in the 1950's. Before these players were called 'rimpatriati', meaning 'repatriated people'. In pre World War II Italy, the oriundi had automatic dual citizenship thus making it very easy to play with the Azzurri. Today dual citizenship is not automatic any more but like in many other countries, they can acquire citizenship more easily than other immigrants not of native extraction owing to the 'jus sanguinis', meaning the 'right of blood'. Immigrants not of Italian extraction and native Italians who happen to be born abroad are not considered Oriundi. Oriundi players are not called Italian players but Italo + the name of their native country, example Italo-Argentine or Italo-Brazilian.
